Welcome to the LCI Quality Assessment Wiki

"Truly assessing students' learning means measuring how they can use and share what they know, what and how they think about learning and about themselves as learners, how they process and use information, and what they can create by combining what they have learned with available resources.... Assessment as an event is a narrow and myopic enterprise, pinning all impressions and evaluations on a single, isolated experience. Assessment as a system provides a rich montage of student learning, created from a collection of multiple pieces of evidence gleaned through a variety of types of assessment, each administered with a clear purpose and timed so as to support data collection as well as promote continued learning."

From Changing the Way You Teach, Improving the Way Students Learn (Martin-Kniep & Picone-Zocchia, 2009)

This wiki was created as a space to organize, support, and explore resources related to Quality Assessment. Developed and maintained by consultants from Learner-Centered Initiatives, it contains resources created for and with educators from a wide variety of classrooms, schools, and communities. Learner-centered practices in assessment support the diversity of today’s classrooms through specific and practical skills, strategies and protocols. We explore questions such as:

  • How does formative assessment support and promote learning?
  • When and how should I assess my students?
  • What does authentic assessment look like?
  • How can I use assessment tools like rubrics, checklists and criteria charts to support student learning and promote their independence?
  • What does it look like to prepare students for mandated tests without succumbing to test prep mania?

To learn more about learner-centered assessment practices, please click on one of the categories below. Each category explores an aspect of learner-centered assessment in more detail. For example, under types, you can learn more about addressing reliability and validity issues. Under purpose, you can learn more about specific assessment components for NYS educators.

Additional Topics we'll explore on this wiki include:

  • Designing quality common benchmark or formative assessments
  • Assessing the quality of commercially available assessments
  • Resources for organizing information generated from assessments including protocols for analysis
